Cultivating Mindfulness
Cultivating mindfulness is one of the keys to practicing a happier, healthier more fulfilling life. In fact, the gateway to the present moment may be hidden right beneath your nose. The innate qualities developed from the act of mindfulness can be practiced through meditation. Mindfulness helps us put some space between ourselves and our reactions. Experts believe that a regular practice of mindfulness meditation can make it easier to get through difficult situations, diminish stress from daily life occurrences and overall aid in a happier life. It is something that can be practiced daily and is accessible to anybody.
The first thing in practicing mindfulness meditation is to set aside a time to do so. It does not have to be the same time everyday as long as you give yourself at least 10 minutes a day to fully indulge in the meditative state. Do not hesitate to go as long as you need. Once you are clear on a time it is time to immerse. Start by acknowledging the present moment. Become aware of the details. What does the room smell like? What do you see in front of you? After becoming aware of your surroundings begin to shift your consciousness towards yourself. Start to become aware of your breath. Notice how it happens without thought. When one breath ends the next one begins. Notice how you feel your breath in your body. Your mind will wander and that is okay. Be kind to yourself. Gently bring your awareness back to your breath. Remember, the goal of this practice is not to quiet your mind but rather to become aware of the present moment. Let yourself relax and become curious about your body. The sensations it experiences, the touch, the connection with the floor and chair. Become aware of any areas of tightness or tension. Relax. Breathe.
Continue this exercise for as long as you feel needed. You can set a timer if you like or simply follow your intuition as long as it takes you. This is a practice that has shifted my life. Try it sometime if you aren't a master already! I promise you will not regret it :)
Stay Inspired and always remember, you are a bad ass. Yours Truly
